Datagram was once again able to offer its optimized Internet Access and data center services to the TED Conference for their TEDGlobal event held in Edinburgh, Scotland, from July 11-July 15

The conference is a fast-paced, highly curated four-day stage program featuring TED¹s famous 18-minute talks, plus music, comedy, tech demos, short talks, video interludes and other surprises. From the Scotland conference location, the TED media team needed to capture video of all the speakers and ship large, raw video files back to New York City, where a local staff member picked up the data twice a day on a drive, ensuring that the footage could be edited at their NYC office and posted online immediately.

“We were able to rely on Datagram, yet again, to provide us with a robust and reliable solution. Datagram saved shipping drives and allowed us to leverage a 1Gbps connection to their backbone,” stated Michael Glass, Director of Media Production at TED.

Shipping raw video data over the internet saved TED the time and inconvenience of having to ship drives from Edinburgh to New York, allowing the popular video site to get edited videos online in hours rather than days.

The big tech news in the end of April was the sudden, far-reaching outage of Amazon’s EC2 (Elastic Compute Cloud), or cloud computing services.

Amazon defines it’s EC2 services this way:

Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud delivers scalable, pay-as-you-go compute capacity in the cloud.

Cloud computing, or cloud hosting, works great…until it doesn’t

Don’t Let Your High Traffic Dream Become Your Biggest Nightmare

Web success in social media is all about traffic.

If you run a social media, a blog, or an online news site, getting a lot of traffic is your greatest dream…but it can quickly become your biggest nightmare if your site traffic grows faster than your infrastructure can accommodate it.

Have you ever put in a web address and waited and waited, but the page would not load?  Ever clicked on a referring link and found the same?  It’s frustrating enough if it is not your site. However, it could be devastating if that happens on your site, because that means that the people you want to see what you have to offer –products, services or ads  – can’t see what you want them to see!

Using Internet Connectivity to Provide Services and Decrease Capital Expense

With technology’s life cycle being so short, companies are constantly looking to change or upgrade the services they deploy to their employees and customers, creating an endless cycle of capital investment. Although accelerated depreciation helps, having to re-invest in new servers and software licenses every year can have quite an adverse effect on company profits. As a result, many companies are looking to deploy new applications and services to their employees and customers by moving them to the Internet.

Many people enjoying their favorite, daily internet “reads” are happily unaware of what goes into making sure their experience while visiting those sites goes smoothly. And that’s okay with us. As part of the team that ensures that end users have the best experiences while visiting a particular site, the team here at Datagram is very happy not to be noticed…because that means we are doing our jobs.

Love your host!

“Love” isn’t a word you come across much in our industry. Not many people can say they love their server. Even less people can say that they love their server hosting provider, but that’s not the case at Datagram.  Companies like PAPER MAG, The Huffington Post, and Café Mom regularly tell people how much they love their hosting provider.  Maybe that’s because at Datagram, we know that our service and support is critical to the success of our clients’ websites.

Because of this, we hear the word “love” quite a bit:

Paul Berry, CTO of Huffington Post (during a panel discussion in New York in December 2010):

I have hated almost every host…but for years I’ve had a love relationship with Datagram.
